Need more zombies…

I wrote a post about an upcoming zombie game a while back. Didn’t publish it, but I probably will eventually, with a big disclaimer over how it’s outdated and stuff. Anyway, I’ve since played two other zombie games, that got me thinking of a new zombie game that would be cool to play. Lemme explain…

The first game is Left 4 Dead (and its creatively titled sequel Left 4 Dead 2) by Valve. I play with my friends some of the time, some of the time solo. Playing with random strangers online isn’t really my thing. Aside from getting kicked whenever they feel I’m slowing them down by not knowing every map by heart, it just doesn’t feel the same to play with some random ppl I probably won’t and wouldn’t even like to play with again. But the gameplay itself is great. Hordes of fast zombies, melee weapons, explosions. If only there was more destructible terrain and different routes through the levels…

The other game is an online thing I found on Kongregate, called Rebuild; it’s a mid-zombie apocalypse game where you… rebuild. Colorful graphics and named population, missions to slowly retake the city. Turns into a lot of tedious micromanaging towards the end of the game, but as I often play this kind of games to keep my hands and eyes occupied while listening to ted talks or watching movies or something, it’s not that big a deal for me.

But these games got me thinking… What if there was a game where we band together, some random ppl from the same online community, irl friends, whatever – and retake a city, block by block, from zombies? This would mean going into buildings and clearing out any zombies, fending off attacking hordes, and stuff. New, strange zombies that jump over the fences and palisades? Sickness among the humans, need to raid a hospital or pharmacy outside the safe zone? Find some people while exploring outside the safe zone, zombies or survivors? Human population need to expand beyond the safe zone? Need more ammo?

As I envision it, it’d feature a city map akin to that in Rebuild, and whenever someone decides the survivors need to get something from the outside, a mission is marked on the screen. Anyone interested and agreeing with the mission may join. Think of the map as a lobby for individual games. Those games, on the other hand, would be more L4D-style. Find medicine X, bring it back. Kill as many zombies as you can, get back alive. If we wanna go by the L4D rules, we could even pit different communities against each other, one always playing as the zombies vs another community’s survivors. And by zombies I mean something akin to the special infected of L4D, tho preferably with the option of playing as a group of regular zombies (or a clown leading a bunch of them as in L4D2).

That would be cool. Actual mechanics of expanding the safe zone, determining non-mission events (like the need for medicine), character handling, research, and whatever else would up to whoever would make such a game, but I’d be interested in playing it. Why is the end of the world as we know it so appealing to a computer-addict like me?

On a related note, the first season of The Colony is pretty cool (didn’t get into the second season), and the occasional episode of Worst Case Scenario I’ve seen has been interesting.

Testing one-two, one-two

I have a twitter account. I’m now just testing to see if this thing connects to twitter and lets everyone know when I have a new rant or train of thought published here.

Also, I’ve been adding most of my online places to the sidebar to make sure they’re all connected and keep me somewhat high in the search engines. See some of my previous post what I hate about all that.

Really about color, ain’t it?

Today’s topic was prompted by an upcoming costume party I have to attend. For which I have some trouble coming up with a low-work constume that’s both cool and fits the theme. And that doesn’t require me to shave my beard.

Anyway, this got me thinking about costumes. Clothes. Fashion. Attire. I don’t pay that much attention to it unless it’s exceptional in some way, and with games being fantasy lands full of exceptional outfits, few of them stand out enough, and I often find myself more intrigued by background NPCs than by the main chars. As for exceptional and not, we get characters (usually female) who wears less and less and it’s less and less of an issue in the industry overall. Or it seems to consumers like me.

But putting aside the straps and loincloths that the less dressed characters wear, most characters wear stuff that in our culturally diverse expressive modern/post-modern world wouldn’t be entirely out of place. Sure, body paint, goggles, and a huge-ass sword might not make it into the everyman’s wardrobe, and if they did, there’s probably only one day a  year when those things would be taking out of there. But the clothes themselves might actually work.

While more commonplace in my country than in palces without conscription, uniforms might not be all that suitable everyday wear. Sure, camo colors and the camo pattern has made it into everyday use, and jeans have lost to more loose pants with more pockets. Still, uniforms will probably not become everyday fashion. Nor will the swimsuit-based outfits in games.

So what would we expect to see a generation raised on video games wear? Layers. Parts. Leggings are apparently in, and they lend themselves to a variety of other clothes. I don’t think men, who generally just wear “pants” and some kind of “shirt”, should wear those, tho. Coats, vests, armwear, headgear… just as long as ppl don’t start sporting those ridiculous goggles, I’m all for it.

And colors. Since games started coming in color, color has been important to the design in games. We could go classic with colors referencing the Mario brothers, or more modern referencing Kratos or the Master Chief. Pick any game with characters with distinct design. Here’s a quick spectrum:

Auron, Kratos, Nariko (rule 63 of Kratos?), Zero in red; Gordon Freeman and Chell orange; Wario, Daisy, Penelo, Scorpion and too many chars in FFX in yellow; Link, Luigi and Blanka green; Mega Man, Sonic, Sub-Zero, Chun-Li, and lots of others in blue; Waluigi in purple; Zelda, Peach, Kairi in pink… I won’t list characters in black.

Actually, colors might be the most striking thing about video game design. IRL, we went from bright colors in the 70s to unnatural colors in the 80s followed by more and more black in the 90s and 00s. Now we’re seeing a return of color. I’m thinking it’s partly thanks to video games.

So really, the way video games will impact what we wear is color. We’ve grown up with a gallery of colorful characters, be they pink-haired princesses or sporting red body paint; be they human or hedgehogs or what the heck Bowser is. Surely this will change how we think of what we wear.

I have a red shirt I wear from time to time. I hear surprisingly few redshirt jokes. Apparently, Star Trek is so 1900s.

These terms only appear in links pointing to this page

Post title is from almost any page with me in it, supposedly. When I check out the page google has cached, it says… well, the above message. Apparently, I’m on some pages linking to random artists I have no relation to, have never heard of, and that hardly have  music I enjoy. And when I click on a link, I’m not even on there.

Cindy Gomez…? Apparently, Someone’s using my name to link to her. Either someone who likes her also likes me, which isn’t all that weird since she sang on the Prince of Persia Sands of Time soundtrack… the video game, thatis. It’s either that, which I somehow doubt is all there is to it, or this is another side to the whole SEO linkfarm spamdexing shit that’s all over the net.

Google, please make a search algorithm that recognizes link farms and stuff like that for what they are. Optionally, someone point me to a better search engine. Not Bing. I said better. You know, when I use multiple search terms, I might actually wanna find a page with all search terms. Not this. (if you’re not seeing what I’m seeing, ask Google about THIS)

On that note, some of the results I get that actually do contain both me and her seem to think we’re similar artists.

So there’s this thing websites do… or actually, the ppl running the websites, do. It’s when they utilize a variety of techniques to make their site seem more popular and more important to search engines. This is bugging me, and has been for some time. I like reading about ppl’s thoughts on my music. I like it when ppl mention me or my music. I like it when I inspire jewelry (really made my day, also mentioned on my twitter).

What I don’t like is having to spend so much time rewriting my searches so I can actually find this. Google’s selective searches do a decent job at filtering out some of the sites that pop up, but how do I know I’m not missing out on sites with genuine interst in my work?

So instead of blog and forum posts that mention my music, I get hundreds of free mp3 sites that offer for free a free mp3 of my music as free mp3s. I can’t think of any way it’s ethical to distribute my music on a site that does more to get in the way of my searches than to actually provide ppl with my music. I tried out a few of them, and in most cases they wanted me to install some executable. Even if this isn’t spyware of some kind, most of my music atm is free and shouldn’t require any hoops to get to. Especially not when someone else stands more to gain from those hoops than I do. I mean, I made the music.

And they hide behind the “we just provide access to the content, it’s not on our servers” excuse. I can understand the youtube newb uploading an album or music video of his/her favorite band/artist without considering this is possible sales and views lost from the artist/band (then again, piracy does increase interest and thus sales… at least with Minecraft). This is done out of appreciation for the music. Ripping game contents to share with other enthusiasts and provide a resource for potential enthusiasts? Fine with me. The modding community? I kind’a wanna join it. Free mp3 download for free get rozovian music free download downloads? Leave my music alone you soulless webcrawling zombie algorithms.

When I have an album out, I’ll want ppl to buy it. I’ll want ppl to tell me what they think. I’ll want ppl to stream it from places where I actually get some revenue back. I want _people_ to hear it. I want ppl to hear it from _me_, not from some spamtastic adful directory (that looks like crap anyway).

Some years ago, the only web find for “rozovian” was some Russian philosophy book (not why I chose the name). Then I got on fictionpress with my teen ambitions, I had a depressing blog about being me as a teen, I had a mikser.net account with two semi-decent original tracks, and I had some accounts on some forums. And then ocremix happened. Now I’m all over the web. Almost every mention of “rozovian” online is me and my ocremix tracks. For better or worse. Even that vid of some dude’s oil change tutorial with my music in the background is all over the place. And apparently on every other oil-related site out there spamming themselves with quasi-related content in order to look important to Google.

At least ocremix is big enough to be the top result for “rozovian”. At least for me.

And yes, I’m intentionally adding lots of links to me. Not accidentally. I want the algorithms to know they’re all me, and think they’re all more important. At least more important that free mp3s blah blah blah.
